McDonald's is celebrating its 50th anniversary in the UK with a major expansion plan.

The fast-food giant will invest £1bn (US$1.3bn) signalling an investment in its franchisees in the UK and Ireland.

This investment will open over 200 new restaurants and create over 24,000 jobs in the next four years.

The new restaurants are part of ongoing investment from McDonald’s to ensure the business continues to meet evolving customer expectations.

The roll out will include testing new restaurant formats, with ‘Drive to’ restaurants recently launched, and smaller formats being trialled this year.

These new restaurants will be designed to meet the evolving needs of customers, with a focus on convenience, technology, and sustainability.

The plans will also see a renewed focus on opening high street restaurants, to support successful high streets across the country as town and city centres that continue to evolve and respond to a variety of challenges.

Alongside new restaurants, the business will continue to upgrade over 1,500 existing restaurants across the UK and Ireland.

McDonald’s economic impact

The “McDonald’s at 50” report by Lichfields, says that in 2023 alone, more than £2bn was spent by McDonald’s with UK-based suppliers and farmers and that there were 209,475 jobs that were supported by McDonald’s across the UK.

Over the past five years, McDonald's has invested a significant sum in enhancing its UK operations.

The report highlights an investment of £618 million (US$772.5mn) in constructing new restaurants and modernising existing ones to deliver an exceptional customer experience.

Additionally, McDonald's UK-based suppliers have collectively invested nearly £1.37 billion (US$1.7mn USD) to improve their production and distribution processes during the same period.

McDonald's first opened its doors in the UK in 1974.

Since then, it has become a ubiquitous presence in British communities.

In recent years, McDonald's has been adapting to changing consumer preferences and market trends, with a focus on digital innovation, healthier options and sustainable practices.

McDonald's has made a significant contribution to the UK economy.

According to a report by Lichfields, the company supported over 209,000 jobs in 2023 and spent over £2bn (US$2.6bn) with UK-based suppliers and farmers.

Over the past 50 years, McDonald's has contributed approximately £94.45bn (US$124.6bn) to the UK economy.

McDonald’s focus on sustainability

McDonald's has also been making strides in sustainability.

The company has committed to sourcing 100% of its beef from farms that meet high animal welfare standards and has introduced initiatives to reduce its environmental impact.
