For those who want a unique travel experience, Airbnb pays its respects to Prince’s career
Multigenerational family holidays are having a travel trend boom says Airbnb, with 8m destinations and even movie experiences to choose from

With over 8m options from across almost every country, Airbnb provides families with the chance for a relaxing holiday or an adventure, from a dreamy villa to Polly Pocket’s compact.

Family travel represents 20% of all nights booked on Airbnb, growing by 15% compared to 2023. A survey from Airbnb said that 81% of families prioritise location, while 79% said value was the most important factor.

Multigenerational family travel grew by 35% during the first half of this year, where older adults booked stays with children or grandchildren. The most popular destinations for multigenerational travel by such families were coastal locations.

Thanksgiving is all about food and family - new travel trend suggests families are going big

This Thanksgiving, 20% of US family bookings include ten or more guests, suggesting multigenerational travel and multiple families sharing one home.

40% of US listings offer three or more bedrooms, which means some guests will be sharing a bedroom. 90% of Airbnb listings include kitchens, essential for Thanksgiving.

Airbnb has shared some tips for staying safe online and on holiday:

Use family focused search hacks—including in reviews

When booking a trip with young children, families have specific needs that must be met. On Airbnb, guests can filter listings by amenities, such as:

  • High chairs
  • Cots
  • Washing machines.

Parents can also utilise the 'search reviews' feature to look for relevant keywords like ‘family’ and ‘children’ to gauge other parents' experiences. For more specific queries, guests are encouraged to message the host before confirming their booking.

Highlights like ‘guest favourite’ and ‘Superhost’ help families know when they’ve spotted a great listing and host.

Avoid debates on where to stay by sharing your wishlist

When holidaying with family and friends, sharing your wishlist can streamline the decision-making process. By allowing everyone to add their preferred homes to a shared list, write notes and even vote on their favourites, families can reduce time spent debating where to stay.

Book on trusted sites to help keep your money safe

It is essential to use a reliable platform for booking trips to avoid potential scams. On Airbnb, guests should always book, pay and communicate through the platform to benefit from its secure processes and refund policies. If anything looks suspicious, report it.

Airbnb movie experiences are another travel trend

Airbnb has a firm grip on cultural trends, creating travel experiences which match the latest movies - creating everything from Barbie’s Malibu Dreamhouse to Shrek’s swamp.

In its latest collaboration, guests can stay at the home of Paddington bear, in Windsor Gardens, London, in celebration of the movie Paddington in Peru.

Children have been told that as Paddington bear journeys to Peru with The Brown family in search of Aunt Lucy, they need a housesitter.

“We are so excited to be working with STUDIOCANAL to bring this extraordinary stay exclusively to Airbnb, where families can experience the magical world of Paddington and sleepover in his cosy family home in London,” said Amanda Cupples, General Manager of Northern Europe at Airbnb. “Travelling on Airbnb is all about creating memories with loved ones and we know that this stay will provide children with special memories to last a lifetime.”

Paddington’s favourite marmalade sandwiches are an optional part of the guest experience.

Airbnb rentals linked to higher rate of burglaries

Yet research from University of Cambridge and the University of Pennsylvania has revealed an Airbnb travel trend that is not family-friendly.

A joint study from the two Universities has shown a correlation between the increase in Airbnb's short-term rental listings and a higher rate of street robberies and burglaries in London (although no marmalade sandwiches were found at the scene).

The research was collected over a three-year period and suggests a 10% rise in active Airbnb rentals alongside an additional 1,000 robberies a year.
