What Is TeamWater Doing to Tackle the Global Water Crisis?

The World Water Development Report 2023 projects that, by 2050, 1.7 to 2.4 billion urban dwellers could face water scarcity, with climate change being a large factor.
Jimmy Donaldson, widely recognised as MrBeast, and Mark Rober are partnering with WaterAid.
Their aim is to collect US$40m to supply two million individuals with clean water for the next decade.
Google and YouTube have shown their support for this mission by contributing US$2m.
Adam Elman, Sustainability Director at Google said on Linkedin: “One in 10 people in the world lack access to clean water. We're helping to change that. I'm thrilled to announce Google and YouTube's support for TeamWater.
“I’ve always believed in the power of people to drive change. And it’s incredible to see how the YouTube creator community continues to lead by example, mobilising millions to take action for our planet.”
He adds: “To help kickstart this mission, Google and YouTube contributed US$2m in funding.
“This campaign is a powerful demonstration of what's possible when a community comes together for a common good.”
How does the partnership work?
TeamWater, a creator-driven crowdfunding initiative, seeks to transform millions of lives worldwide through access to clean water.
The organisation states that a mere $1 provides one person with clean water for a year. They operate under a time constraint, aiming to raise the US$40m within a month.
The campaign encourages community engagement through fundraising pledges, producing TeamWater content and promoting the cause on personal social media.
They have engaged several prominent content creators, who collectively have billions of followers, to spread the word across different platforms in 21 countries and six continents.
How will the campaign help?
The campaign collaborates not only with WaterAid but also with three other essential partners.
GivePower operates solar water farms, extracting salt, microbes and contaminants from water. The company provides water directly to communities that are locally managed, which creates employment, ensures affordability and enables reliable, community-owned operations for years.
Hayes Barnard, CEO, Give Power, said on Linkedin: “Access to clean water doesn’t just improve lives, it transforms entire communities.
“GivePower was created to bring sustainable solutions to people who need them most, and stories like this show the real impact behind our mission.”
Alongside GivePower, DigDeep and Alok Institute are involved. US-based non-profit, DigDeep, works on water access research, workforce development and policy advocacy while also running clean water projects across the US.
Alok Institute supports transformation projects and cultural promotion while ensuring rights access, water access and nature protection to inspire social participation and solidarity.
The collaboration will fund enduring infrastructure in cooperation with communities. Some of these systems include:
- Piped water systems to homes, schools, and hospitals
- Solar-powered pumps to enhance groundwater access without electricity
- Mobile water-quality labs and remote monitoring
- Water filters and filtration systems ensure safe water for consumption
- Community training programmes so locals can maintain these systems
Projects are planned in Rwanda, Mozambique, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Colombia, Kenya, Brazil and the US.
Why is the campaign needed?
WaterAid is a charity focused on providing clean water for everyone.
It reports that millions of children around the world lack clean water, proper sanitation and hygiene to protect themselves.
Women and girls often spend hours collecting water, leaving little time for education or work. Access to clean water enhances their health, dignity and opportunities.
Without clean water, as WaterAid reports, people resort to using contaminated water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning, which spreads diseases like cholera and typhoid.
"We're pairing the power of the world's most influential content creators with WaterAid's decades of on-the-ground experience to tackle one of the world's most solvable challenges: the global water crisis," said Kelly Parsons, CEO, WaterAid America.
"Every dollar raised will fund long-term, sustainable water solutions, from solar-powered wells to gravity-fed pipelines, delivering clean water to millions, for generations to come."
