How Ferrero is Showcasing its Sustainable Commitment

Ferrero, a leading name in the sweet-packaged food industry worldwide, focuses on positively influencing its value chain through sustainable practices.
In its sixteenth sustainability report, the company exhibits ongoing advancements in its core sustainability goals.
Giovanni Ferrero, Executive Chairman of the Ferrero Group, says: "Sustainability is deeply embedded in Ferrero's long-term strategy. It's a fundamental driver of business resilience and shapes the decisions we make, as we grow responsibly.
"In the face of global challenges, particularly climate change, our commitment remains clear: to source responsibly, innovate boldly and safeguard the natural world for future generations.
"This progress is made possible by embracing collective action, leveraging innovation, research and development and continuously learning from experience to deliver measurable, meaningful impact."
There is steady development in tracing its global supply chain.
Over 90% of essential ingredients now have mapped origins. Collaborations with Sourcemap and Starling contribute to more precise tracking of vital commodities, achieving 97% traceability for both cocoa and palm oil, with hazelnuts at 94%.
Reduction in Carbon Emissions
These efforts contribute to Ferrero's 2030 environmental objectives, notably the goal to halve greenhouse gas emissions. There are already reductions, compared to the 2017/18 baseline:
- Scope 1 and 2 emissions decrease by 21.7%.
- In Scope 3 initiatives, FLAG (Forest, Land and Agriculture) and non-FLAG emissions are separated to enhance carbon data accuracy and reliability.
- 90% of electricity for manufacturing and warehousing now comes from renewable sources.
- 92.1% of packaging is designed to be recyclable, with the company ensuring more than 90% of packaging materials are reusable, recyclable or compostable.
Innovative Plastic Packaging Solutions
Ferrero advances in cutting virgin plastic usage, achieving a 13% reduction in the plastic-to-product ratio.
Transforming Ferrero Rocher boxes from polystyrene to polypropylene in North America and China saves around 11,000 tonnes of plastic.
The introduction of Nutella Plant-Based in jars containing 60% recycled glass and Kinder Joy's paper spoon are notable initiatives.
Moreover, 100% of Ferrero's plants now hold certification against the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) Standard.
Addressing responsible consumption, Ferrero focuses on well-defined serving sizes. 85% of marketed volumes have a serving size of 130 kcal or less, 63% are 100 kcal or less and 91% fall under 150 kcal per serving.
Lapo Civiletti, CEO of the Ferrero Group, adds: "We made steady progress on our sustainability agenda during fiscal year 2023/2024. I am particularly proud of the ongoing steps we are taking to achieve our long-term commitments.
"We have successfully advanced our sustainability journey while maintaining strong financial stewardship across the company.
"We are making great efforts on the traceability of our key ingredients and improving supply chain visibility, while advancing our commitments to promoting human rights and continuing our work on decarbonisation across the business."
Ferrero is committed to empowering individuals. The company builds on established sourcing relationships with international and local bodies, including the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and Save the Children.
In the past year, Ferrero joined forces with the Organisation of American States (OAS) to foster inclusion, equity and access to rights through sport and physical activities, focusing on children, adolescents and women across the Americas.
