Brewing giant, Anheuser-Busch, expands its commitment to domestic operations and workforce development signaling a shift in operational strategy

Anheuser-Busch Companies has doubled its previously announced manufacturing investment from £222m (US$300m) to to £445m(US$600m), marking a significant commitment to US operations and workforce development that could offer lessons for food and drink industry leaders navigating similar strategic decisions around domestic manufacturing capabilities.

The manufacturer of brands including Budweiser, Bud Light, Michelob Ultra and Busch Light is deploying the funds across 2025 and 2026 to strengthen its brewing facilities, establish technical training infrastructure and expand its veteran hiring initiatives. The scale of investment reflects growing industry focus on operational resilience and workforce sustainability.

For C-suite executives in the food and drink sector, the move highlights the increasing strategic importance of balancing capital investment in physical infrastructure with human capital development, particularly as manufacturers face ongoing challenges in attracting and retaining skilled technical workers.

Strengthening domestic brewing operations

Anheuser-Busch Companies, a subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev), says the investment will support brewery enhancements, technical skills programmes and veteran recruitment efforts across its US footprint.

Brendan Whitworth, CEO of Anheuser-Busch, says: "Anheuser-Busch's US$600m investment is a testament to our unwavering commitment to the future of American manufacturing. By strengthening our manufacturing operations, we are creating sustainable careers, not just jobs and investing in the people who are vital to our success. We are proud to continue building the next generation of manufacturing leaders through our new technical training centres while also providing new opportunities in the workforce for our nation's veterans."

The expanded investment builds on an initial £222m (US$300m) commitment announced in May 2025. Specific facility investments include £22m (US$30m) at its Jacksonville, Florida operation, £5.5m (US$7.4m) at the Los Angeles brewery and £6.8m (US$9.2m) at the Cartersville, Georgia site. According to the company, these funds have been allocated to upgrading brewing and packaging equipment.

Upskilling 90% of the manufacturing workforce

The company plans to establish 15 technical skills training centres at its operational facilities nationwide. These centres will provide employees with advanced training spanning technical fundamentals, digital tools, management systems and mechanical and electrical systems.

Through this infrastructure, Anheuser-Busch aims to upskill more than 90% of its manufacturing workforce over the next five years. The initiative builds on existing efforts that have already trained more than 2,700 employees since the company opened its Technical Excellence Centre in St. Louis in 2022.

Jay Timmons, President and CEO of the National Association of Manufacturers, says: "Anheuser-Busch's expanded investment is a commitment to the American worker and the future of our nation's strength in manufacturing. By partnering with the Manufacturing Institute, Anheuser-Busch is powering a new generation of opportunity for the world's finest workforce, the manufacturing workforce."

Timmons adds that the local training centres and trade school partnerships could transform careers by enabling manufacturing workers to develop critical skills needed for long-term employment, economic growth and community development.

Veterans recruitment and skills translation

Anheuser-Busch is continuing its collaboration with the Manufacturing Institute's Heroes MAKE America initiative, which provides former and current US service members with resources to pursue manufacturing careers.

The company and the Manufacturing Institute jointly developed Smart Resume, a platform designed to make military skills and experience visible, verified and easily understood by employers. According to the company's website, it currently employs 1,800 veterans and active service members across its operations.

The veteran-focused recruitment strategy could offer a model for other food and drink manufacturers seeking to address skills gaps while tapping into a workforce with technical training and operational discipline.
