About Amcorâs Fibre-Based Ready-Meal Packaging Trays

Amcor is a global leader in packaging solutions, with a main focus on consumer and healthcare products.
It has announced an expansion of its collaboration with Metsä Group, a Finnish forest industry group and G. Mondini, a provider of food packaging equipment.
The collaboration involves a fibre-based tray system for protein and chilled ready-meal applications.
Amcorâs sustainable packaging
The packaging solution will be featured at Interpack, which is Europeâs largest packaging event, held from 7-13 May in Germany.
Amcorâs development team has worked closely with G. Mondini to ensure seamless performance on its Trave Streamline machine for meat and food producers.
This demonstration aims to help encourage the adoption of fiber-based packaging.
The packaging features a fully integrated fibre-based tray that combines a lightweight barrier liner and top web, designed specifically for ready-meal use.
Paolo Mondini, General Manager at G. Mondini, says: âAt G. Mondini, we have always believed that truly more sustainable packaging can only succeed if it performs flawlessly on the production line.
âOur collaboration with Amcor and Metsä Group is a perfect example of what happens when machine expertise, barrier technology and fiber innovation come together.
âThe result is packaging that upholds the most rigorous food safety requirements, delivers state-of-the-art consumer experience and meets retailer expectations.
âThe Trave Streamline running live at Interpack will demonstrate that fibre-based solutions are not just an environmental choice, they are a high-performance one.â
Building a fibre-based tray
Amcorâs AmFiber tray and film is engineered to protect perishable foods and extend shelf life, in response to rising consumer confidence in sustainable materials.
Its distinctive packaging format offers brands enhanced shelf appeal, while supporting their environmental commitments.
The tray is designed using Muoto, which is a molded fibre packaging solution developed by Metsä Groupâs innovation company, Metsä Spring.
This recyclable solution is based on renewable wood sourced from northern forests, complemented by Amcorâs range of advanced barrier liners and top-web films to address different product applications.
It can include a range of convenience features such as microwaveable, ovenable and easy-peel options.
Antti Valtonen, VP Muoto Project at Metsä Spring, says: âOur collaboration with Amcor began about a year ago, and it is highly rewarding to see this partnership â together with the valuable contribution of G. Mondini â now delivering tangible results.
âBy combining Muotoâs exceptional quality and builtâin sturdiness with excellent barrier performance, we are creating a solution that truly comes to life.
âThis collaboration shows how the right partners can bring together performance, reliability and suitability for demanding food applications.â
About the collaboration
The G. Mondini Trave Streamline packaging system enables trays to pass through the sealing process with reduced friction, improving efficiency in the production process.
The companyâs digital printing capabilities also allow direct customisation of the fibre trays, which enables strong brand differentiation while preserving its natural appearance.
The collaboration combines Amcorâs barrier films, Metsä Groupâs expertise in processing wood and G. Mondiniâs knowledge of machinery.
Ilya Syshchikov, Vice President, Global Fibre at Amcor, says: âHigh-performing packaging requires a fully integrated system, where every element, from tray and barrier liner to top web and machinery, works seamlessly together.
“By collaborating with Metsä Group and G. Mondini, we are creating a complete packaging solution that simplifies implementation, addresses customer challenges and helps brands focus on delivering exceptional products.”
