Nestlé Trials Quality Street Paper Tub for Christmas Treats
Food manufacturing giant Nestlé is on a journey to minimise its use of virgin plastic. Paper manufacturing over the use of plastic is one option the company is pursuing. So this Christmas, over 200,000 paper tubs of Quality Street will be available at Tesco stores, carrying 150 tonnes of the popular chocolate treats.
The paper tub, still in its signature purple, has an integrated re-close feature, which allows it to be securely closed after being opened (if the contents last long enough). After being emptied, the tub can be repurposed (for Christmas decorations, a sewing kit or for homemade treats) or it can be added to the household recycling bin.
The tub has been tested to ensure both food quality and freshness throughout transportation and storage. Yet Nestlé will monitor the tub’s popularity with shoppers, as well as feedback from supply chain leaders and in-store teams across Tesco.
Nestlé is proud to be the first major food manufacturer to trial a paper tub at Christmas
Reaching first place in both our Top 10: Food Manufacturers and Top 10 Biscuit Manufacturers, Nestlé is a leader in food production. From its start in 1866, the company has grown from a single-product enterprise, to over 2,000 brands in 186 countries.
Now the company is playing its part in making its products more sustainable and less of an environmental burden.
Nestlé’s Confectionery Europe team is proud of the paper tub. Cheryl Allen, Head of Sustainability, is looking forward to seeing the ‘exciting innovation’ take off and hit the shelves.
“We’re committed to making our packaging more sustainable, keeping in mind the changing needs of shoppers and advancements in technology,” she shared. “Of course, with all potential packaging changes, we want to get it right, so this trial will bring us valuable information to inform our next steps as we keep pushing to reduce our use of virgin plastic.”
Jemma Handley, Senior Brand Manager for Quality Street, is looking forward to seeing what Quality Street’s faithful fans make of the paper tub.
“A lot of care and hard work has gone into the trial and we’re proud to be the first major manufacturer to trial a paper tub at Christmas,” she said. “The beautiful design has been devised specifically for a paper product and we love how it looks, and of course, shoppers can expect the same great tasting Quality Street sweets that they know and love inside.
“We know there are some Quality Street fans who, controversially, like to put their wrappers back in the tub once they’ve eaten them - with the paper tub, they can put the paper wrappers back for a good reason - it can go straight into the recycling.”
