ENGIE will help Heineken to achieve its key sustainability priorities
Explore how ENGIE and Heineken's partnership pioneers sustainability in brewing, aiming for net zero emissions by 2050

ENGIE, a leading energy and renewables supplier, has unveiled a sustainable partnership with the Romanian unit of global brewing giant, Heineken.

This collaboration is set to boost Heineken’s initiative to hit net zero CO₂ emissions in Scope 1 and 2 by 2030, while furthering its broader sustainability achievements. Multiple decarbonisation initiatives are slated for implementation across Heineken's three Romanian breweries located in Miercurea-Ciuc, Ungheni (Mures) and Craiova.

A focus on brewery waste and heat recovery

In these efforts, innovative energy solutions and sustainability practices, including enhanced energy conservation methods, as well as the installation of an onsite biodigester and additional heat pumps, will be introduced.

“We are delighted to be Heineken’s chosen partner for the provision of complex and turnkey decarbonisation solutions for three of our client’s industrial sites,” said Nicolas Richard, CEO of ENGIE Romania. “We proposed an integrated approach, from strategy to execution, consisting of innovative solutions and technologies for decarbonisation and heat utilisation. Our strategy combines biomethane production from brewery waste and heat recovery through heat pumps. This customised approach will contribute to Heineken’s global ambitions to reach net zero.”

Heineken Romania’s engagement with ENGIE is a critical component of its Integrated Net Zero Production programme.

Through this initiative, Heineken has forged technical alliances with firms such as Arcadis, NIRAS, and Royal HaskoningDHV. These partnerships are strategically designed to sharpen the brewery’s energy efficiency in production and logistics and to ease the shift towards renewable energy.

“Our partners bring us expertise in their field, knowledge of the best available technology solutions and an outside-in view of the problems we are trying to solve," said Magne Setnes, Chief Supply Chain Officer of Heineken. “These skills are paramount to helping Heineken Global in its ambitions to reach net zero in Scope 1 and 2 by 2030, which cannot be accomplished in isolation. Collaboration with experts is essential to reach our ambitions at the speed and scale we need.”

A global partnership will brew a better world

This collaboration is, however, not the initial leap towards sustainable partnership between ENGIE and Heineken.

With recent strides securing its position as a sustainability leader within the beverage sector, Heineken has already set precedents.

In 2022, Heineken Spain and ENGIE Spain inaugurated a solar thermal energy plant at Heineken's Seville factory. Operational by September 2023, it stands as Europe's largest industrial solar thermal power facility.

Under a 20-year Build, Own, Operate, Transfer (BOOT) agreement, ENGIE Spain guarantees 100% renewable energy provision to Heineken Spain, heralding significant environmental milestones, predicting an annual CO₂ reduction by about 7,000 tons and slashing fossil gas consumption by 60%.

"With the execution and construction of this plant we underline once again ENGIE's commitment to our industrial customers, making available our technical capabilities and our team of professionals to enable the viability of sustainable and renewable energy alternatives," shared Loreto Ordóñez, CEO of ENGIE Spain. "We thank Heineken Spain for their confidence in us to be part of this project that is already allowing them to obtain cleaner and more efficient energy in their production processes".

This facility is a cornerstone in Heineken Spain's goal to become the first net-zero emission brewery in Spain by 2050.

As part of its 'Brew a Better World' 2030 ambitions, Heineken has outlined an array of sustainability objectives, ensuring these goals are central to its business strategy.

Formulated with the input of internal and external stakeholders, these priorities aim to spark significant industry discussions and impact.

'Brew a Better World' pivots on three fundamental principles – social, responsibility and environmental, through which Heineken aspires to craft a fair, equitable and sustainable future focused on net-zero achievements.

In 2023, showing progress towards these targets, Heineken has already cut its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 34%, measured against 2018 levels.

“We must continue to embed sustainability into the fabric of how we work," added Joanna Price, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at Heineken. "The steps that we are taking today will enable us to anticipate and mitigate risks, adapt to changing market conditions and seize new opportunities. It’s not only the right thing for the planet and society, but also for our business and stakeholders."
