Nespresso Professional unveils Fairtrade single origin capsule
Nespresso Professional is expanding its organic portfolio with the flavours of Indonesia, using a single origin Arabica blend with woody & cereal notes

Nespresso Professional has announced the launch of its newest coffee capsule in the Origins range: Indonesia, a premium, Fairtrade, single origin coffee.

The new Indonesia capsule will support other Nespresso Professional flavours from Brazil, Peru, Congo and Colombia, as an addition to the Origins collection.

As a part of Nestlé’s sustainability initiative, each Professional Origins Organic coffee is ‘Made with Care’. It is sourced from carefully selected regions, refined, harvested and processed using methods endorsed by local farmers.

Nespresso is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nestlé Group, which supports over 150,000 local coffee farmers' transition to regenerative practices, which not only increase yields, but also improve farmers' incomes.

Coffee that is sustainable, authentic and ethically sourced

Indonesia Arabica comes from central Aceh, in the north of Sumatra Isle in Indonesia’s west. The humid climate gave rise to wet hulling, a coffee farming technique unique to Indonesia.

The coffee beans are harvested per usual, then pulped in hand cranked pulpers, fermented in bags overnight and rinsed clean the following day. The beans are hulled while still wet, so that they come out a misshapen, milky blue or green.

The sun directly penetrates the green bean, allowing the coffee to dry up to three times quicker to the optimum moisture level (10 -12%).

This unique taste profile is unmistakably Indonesian.

Discover Indonesia's rich flavours

Most importantly, Nespresso’s Indonesia blend is cultivated according to Fairtrade standards and sourced 100% through The Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality Program.

Launched in 2020, Nespresso Professional has cultivated the organic experience, with more than 7.5m organic capsules sold to hotels and businesses.

“As a leading provider of coffee solutions for businesses, we are excited to introduce Indonesia to our Origins range,” shared Nick Stevens, B2B Commercial Director, UK & ROI. “This new capsule is a tribute to the skilled farmers of Indonesia who have passed down their expertise for generations. It reflects our commitment to sustainability and to sourcing the highest quality coffee from diverse regions around the world.

“The launch of Indonesia comes at a time when businesses and consumers are seeking more sustainable, authentic and ethically sourced products. Nespresso's AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program ensures that the coffee is not only high in quality but also contributes to the well-being of the farmers and communities involved in its production.”

Nestlé’s growth attributed to Nespresso

Nestlé's H1 2024 results showed that its coffee brands, Nescafé and Nespresso, have enjoyed strong organic growth. However overall sales growth for the consumer goods giant were below market expectations.

Three years of inflation, coupled with a global cost of living crisis, had seen consumers trade down to cheaper products.

"There is value-seeking behaviour among consumers,” said Nestlé CEO Mark Schneider. “There is pressure, especially at the low-income range."

Nestlé also trimmed its projections for organic sales by 1%, to 3%, yet the company is stepping up investment in its brands. In addition, Nestlé's Income Accelerator programme is making significant strides in addressing challenges faced by cocoa-farming families, such as increasing yields, diversifying income, promoting education and empowering women.

It rewards good practices, targets child labour reduction and seeks to close the living income gap for cocoa farmers in West Africa.
