Stora Enso launches Beyond Board to advise customers on making a fully informed investment decision in moving to fibre-based circular food packaging

It’s rare to buy food that does not come in some form of packaging. From plastic bags to cartons, many types of food packaging contribute to plastic waste, which will rot in landfill or slowly break down in the ocean, over many years. Other forms of packaging, such as tin cans and cardboard boxes are recycled.

Plastic was introduced to the food sector in the 1950s and steadily grew in popularity and usage over the second half of the 20th century. Researchers in the 1990s began to voice concern about the volume of plastic waste in the ocean and the sustainability movement as we know it has grown from there.

Now, Stora Enso, a provider of renewable products in packaging and biomaterials as well as wooden construction, has launched its Beyond Board Packaging Services. As customers seek out the most sustainable and affordable options while food shopping, the Beyond Board Packaging Service aims to support customers in making informed decisions.

Stora Enso hopes that this will help customers to navigate demands laid out by packaging regulations in Europe and the need to transition to a circular economy.

How Beyond Board Services can empower customers to make informed, sustainable packaging choices

Paper and forest product manufacturer Stora Enso was formed in 1998 and is based in Helsinki, Finland. From wood fibre-based packaging solutions to mass timber construction, Stora Enso innovates with wood to equip companies and brands alike with the means to do better for both people and planet.

The sustainability training aspect offers a range of roles, including sales, sourcing and product management and will receive guidance around forestry and fibres, circularity, recyclability and the impact on the climate from packaging.

Josefin Carlsson, Head of Services at Stora Enso Packaging Materials said that being a truly supportive and cost-effective partner for customers requires Stora Enso drawing on its own data and expertise to provide unique industry insights, guided by the latest measurement tools.

“Beyond Board is about going beyond product for customers who want the support to make a fully informed investment decision about moving to fibre-based circular packaging, including the benefits from lower EPR fees to a reduced carbon footprint that will be essential to meet net zero targets,” he shared. “We are looking forward to supporting even more customers with our Beyond Board services and enlarging our portfolios further to ensure we can help our customers navigate ever-changing cost pressures, consumer expectations and an increasingly complex regulatory environment.”

Sustainability in paper & forest product manufacturing

Toby Croucher, SVP Forest Sustainability at Stora Enso, spoke exclusively with our sister title Manufacturing Digital, to discuss how the paper manufacturing industry can protect forests and use them to a sustainable advantage.

“Humankind can drive sustainable forest management and use wood effectively at the same time – the two are not mutually exclusive! Of course, using wood requires scrutiny, given that harvesting, if not done sustainably, can pose a risk to biodiversity,” explained Croucher. “But, protecting forests is firstly about being proactive. Our forestry operations are planned according to approved biodiversity management practices which aim to preserve specific structural features throughout the forest’s lifecycle. In addition, we look at all stages, from harvesting to regeneration, using a science-based approach to enhance the biodiversity of our forests.”
