Nestlé announces Laurent Freixe as its new CEO, striving to navigate changing consumer preferences, sustainability concerns and drive digital innovation

Nestlé, the world's largest food and beverage company, has announced Laurent Freixe as its new CEO.

Freixe’s appointment is seen as a strategic move to maintain continuity while driving innovation and growth.

He has worked at Nestlé for 37 years and currently is the Executive VP and CEO of Zone Latin America, bringing a wealth of knowledge to his new role.

In his new role, this leadership transition comes at a crucial time for Nestlé, as the company navigates challenges such as changing consumer preferences, sustainability concerns and the aftermath of global supply chain disruptions

Recent developments have also seen Nestlé focusing on health and wellness products, divesting underperforming segments and investing in plant-based alternatives to meet evolving consumer demands.

Founded in 1866, Nestlé has grown from a single-product enterprise to a global powerhouse with over 2,000 brands across 186 countries.

Nestlé’s new leadership and strategy

Mark Schneider, current CEO, has decided to relinquish his roles over his 8 years with the company, where he has helped shape the company’s portfolio according to Nestlé’s strategy with a focus on high-growth categories like coffee, pet care and nutritional health products.

Schneider says: "I am grateful for what we have achieved, having transformed Nestlé into a future-proofed, innovative and sustainable business."

Meanwhile, Freixe's experience, including his most recent position as CEO of Zone Americas, positions him well to lead Nestlé in its competition against other food industry giants.

Since joining Nestlé in 1986, Freixe has steadily progressed within the company, taking on various roles of increasing responsibility across different businesses, markets and regions. He successfully navigated Zone Europe during the financial and economic crisis, from 2008 until 2014.

He then took over as CEO of Zone Americas, where he drove growth.

Following the creation of Nestlé's new Zone structure in 2022, Freixe was also appointed CEO of Zone Latin America, where he has been successfully leading through challenging conditions.

Additionally, Freixe is interested in developing future leaders and talents, shown by his role in the Nestlé Leadership and Training Programs as well as the Nestlé Needs YOUth initiative, which promotes youth employment.

Freixe's leadership will be crucial in maintaining Nestlé's market position and expanding into new areas.

Nestlé’s global market dynamics and future prospects

The appointment of Freixe comes as the global food industry faces significant challenges and opportunities.

Nestlé, along with its competitors, is navigating a complex landscape of consumer trends, including the rise of plant-based diets, demand for sustainable packaging and the growing importance of e-commerce in food retail.

Freixe's experience in the Americas market could prove invaluable as Nestlé seeks to strengthen its position in key growth regions.

This move may also signal a renewed focus on emerging markets, where Nestlé has historically performed well but faces increasing competition from local brands and other multinational corporations.

Paul Bulcke, Chairman of the Board of Directors, says: "I have known Laurent for a long time and highly regard him as a talented leader with strategic acumen, extensive in-market experience and expertise as well as a deep understanding of markets and consumers.."

Freixe adds: "I am privileged to have been given the opportunity to continue building and strengthening Nestlé, and I am excited to take on this responsibility.

There will always be challenges, but we have unparalleled strengths, such as iconic brands and products, an unmatched global presence, leading innovation and execution capabilities, and above all, exceptional people and teams. We can strategically position Nestlé to lead and win everywhere we operate."
