Carlsberg has announced that it will invest EUR€100mn ($117 million) to upgrade its Kronenbourg brewery in Obernai, France, its largest brewery in Europe.

Carlsberg, the world’s fourth-largest brewer behind Anheuser Busch InBev and Heineken, will modernise the brewery and increase its capacity amid the international success of its French beer brands such as Kronenbourg 1664.

Carlsberg CEO, Cees ‘t Hart, said: “We are proud of position as the leading French brewer and of the impressive growth of Kronenbourg 1664 inside as well as outside of France.

“In order to continue to grow we need to invest, and today’s announcement is testament to our shared values and promising growth opportunities.”

The announcement was made during French president Emmanuel Macron’s visit to the New Carlsberg Glyptotek museum in Copenhagen.

The brewer says the investments follows several years of “positive developments” in France and the success of the Kronenbourg beer brand.

Kronenbourg, which was founded in 1664, was acquired by Carlsberg in 2008.

The brewer relies on the Western Europe market for more than half of its sales.
